The bigger picture
International statistics

Sexually transmitted diseases impose a huge global health burden.

Total reported STIs per year, excluding HIV and hepatitis538,000,000 cases – or 1:11 people in the world – or over 1,000,000 infections caught every day.

Some 236 million people are estimated to have trichomoniasis, with 94 million new cases a year.

Chlamydial infections affect some 162 million people, with 97 million new cases annually.

An estimated 32 million new cases of genital warts occur each year,
and there are some 78 million new cases of gonorrhoea.

Genital herpes infects 21 million people a year, and syphilis 19 million.

More than 9 million people are infected with chancroid each year.

Condoms are highly effective in preventing HIV.

Latin America and The Caribbean
now has the second highest HIV prevalence rate globally, after sub-Saharan Africa.


Sadly the problems we are trying to prevent through education are universal and increasing.

Life expectancy due to HIV/AIDS in some southern African countries is now in the early 40s - we are working to help others be more fortunate.

We are aiming to help the young people of today stay safer - to allow them to become the adults of tomorrow.
